The examination is performed with a high-definition ultrasound of the thyroid and lymph nodes, by a specialized and experienced radiologist in the field.
The exam is painless and risk free. Thus, the examination can also be performed on pregnant patients with complete safety.
The main goal of the examination is to perform a complete and correct mapping of the thyroid gland and neck area so that the surgeon can plan the surgery in such a way that the initial surgery is the only one the patient will undergo.
Thus, the surgeon will achieve:
- removal of all affected lymph nodes
- maximizing the likelihood of treatment, while reducing the likelihood of relapse
- selective lymph node dissection
It is performed before surgery in every patient who has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer or there is a strong suspicion of thyroid cancer. Therefore, before the recommendation of this specific test, a cytological examination of the thyroid needle has obviously been performed, which revealed:
- Bethesda VI (thyroid cancer) or
- Bethesda V (strong suspicion of thyroid cancer)
